From April 17 to 25, 2018, joint activities were conducted for early detection of tuberculosis among convicts and personnel of correctional facilities in the colonies 3/6 and 3/8 in Khatlon region.

1845 convicts and 45 employees of two correctional institutions have got information on tuberculosis transmission routes and preventive measures, received TB civil doctors’ consultations, participated in voluntary survey to identify tuberculosis and, if necessary, had sputum taken for tuberculosis examination.

To avoid duplication, only those convicts who had recently entered the prison and have been quarantined or not covered by routine TB screening of the prison medical service were invited to participate in the TB screening.

As a result of the TB screening, 84 convicts with suspicions and symptoms on tuberculosis had their sputum taken. The obtained biomaterials were sent for examination to two laboratories of civil and penitentiary anti-tuberculosis services in Dushanbe. Modern microscopy and rapid tuberculosis diagnosis methods through GenExpert were used in analyzing the sputum samples. One convict was repeatedly diagnosed with tuberculosis. Samples of his sputum have been directed to additional examinations.

The above-mentioned activities were organized by the Republican public organization "AFEW-Tajikistan" according to the annual plan agreed with the Republican Center for Population Protection from TB of the MHSPP of RT and approved by the Main Department for the Execution of Criminal Penalties of the MoJ of RT.

Reference: Over the past 15 years, the AFEW-Tajikistan has been implementing joint projects to protect health and prevent socially significant diseases in the institutions of the Criminal Execution System of the Republic of Tajikistan. The AFEW-Tajikistan’s technical assistance is aimed at enhancing professional medical skills of correctional staff, improving conditions of detention and integrating services between civil and prison healthcare and community organizations. Implementing joint activities to prevent HIV and TB among convicts and social support for those who are being released, the AFEW-Tajikistan pays special attention to people living with HIV, TB patients, drug addicts and women.
